As for the curriculum, it depends on the 16-year-olds. Regular kids who don’t care much for school will probably ignore you no matter what you say, but will probably be most interested by war. I’d choose interesting wars over the course of History from around the globe. Start early with a couple battle examples from Mesopotamia. Next, Peloponnesian War, to show off some brilliant strategy. Alexander the Great’s Persian Campaign is a must, the man was a superb military commander. Then, I’d say the Second Punic War. After that, perhaps Genghis Khan’s brilliant military success across Europe, citing why it was so efficient. Jump ahead to Tokugawa Iyasu’s Siege of Osaka. Anything Napoleon commanded is crucial. I’d end the year with a bang, and do all of World War II if possible.
As for hard working 16-year-olds? I’d do the Rise of the Roman Empire through the Fall of the Roman Empire. Citing culture, military, and political changes or successes. You could easily occupy a year with Rome. The only thing I’d avoid is social history, in my personal experience, social history can be mind-numbingly boring to even the most passionate historians, let alone 16-year-old kids.
